This report assesses the development of relations between Taiwan and Myanmar, examining their political, economic, and societal dimensions against the backdrop of regional geopolitics and domestic transformations in Myanmar. It outlines Myanmar’s strategic importance as a resource-rich country located between China and India and traces the historical constraints on Taiwan–Myanmar relations stemming from China’s influence and the One China principle. The analysis highlights how relations gradually deepened following Myanmar’s political and economic opening in the 2010s, particularly through trade, investment, educational exchanges, and people-to-people contacts. Taiwan’s engagement expanded under the New Southbound Policy, with growing business cooperation and the establishment of representative offices facilitating bilateral ties. Taiwanese soft power—manifested through popular culture, consumer goods, education, and civil society—has played a significant role in shaping Taiwan’s positive image in Myanmar. The chapter also examines Taiwan’s response to the 2021 military coup in Myanmar, noting its alignment with democratic countries in condemning violence and supporting democratic principles, in contrast to China’s position. Finally, it assesses future prospects, arguing that China’s strengthened influence following the coup poses serious constraints on Taiwan’s activities. While past cooperation risks erosion, the long-term trajectory of Taiwan–Myanmar relations remains contingent on political developments within Myanmar and the broader regional balance of power.
