Language contact in Africa
Original language description
This chapter discusses the linguistic contact between Austronesian and Bantu languages. Languages involved onthe Austronesian side are Malagasy and, to a much lesser extent, Malay. On the Bantu side, the languages thathave played a role in this contact are mainly Comorian languages and Swahili. The chapter begins by looking athow Malagasy migration history has been approached, including speculations about multiple migrations, migration routes and the presence of an earlier population in Madagascar. It distinguishes two Malagasyprotolanguages, one representing the language as it was just before the migrations, and the other representing itafter it had acquired a Bantu substratum. The chapter also gives an account of the actual Bantu linguisticinfluence on Malagasy, including a Bantu substratum and its effects on the lexicon, phonology, and grammar. Finally, it describes the influence of Malagasy and Malay on Bantu languages.
