    Introduction

  • Original language description

This chapter provides a background on the Malayo-Polynesian languages of Southeast Asia (MPSEA), which constitute a primary branch of the Austronesian language family. It explores the Southeast Asian triangle that encompasses the Malayo-Polynesian languages and forms an integrated macro-area from the point of view of cultural and historical influences in more recent times. It also mentions how the presence of Malay and Javanese loanwords across the whole of Island Southeast Asia, into Mainland Southeast Asia and out into Madagascar demonstrates the interconnectedness of the region in terms of indigenous networks. The chapter introduces a wide range of scholarly viewpoints on Austronesian languages, aiming to achieve high levels of granularity in description and accuracy in generalization. It takes a diversity perspective on linguistic regions of the MPSEA area in detail, incorporating the many different viewpoints on their history and typology.
