How Many Jōyō Kanji Readings Are Rarely Used?
Original language description
The overwhelming number of kanji readings is considered to be one of the main factors why Japanese kanji are so difficult to master. Given that there is a substantial number of jōyō kanji readings that have a low acquisition rate even in the case of native Japanese, it can be argued that it is not necessary for JSL students to learn all readings. In this study, I demonstrate that over one-fifth (21.24 %) of jōyō kanji readings can be deemed redundant for the vast majority of L2 learners. I hope that the study will inspire other researchers and teachers to investigate this topic further, and that it will encourage authors of kanji textbooks aimed for JSL students to thoroughly consider whether it really is beneficial to list all readings that appear in the official jōyō list.
