Using archival sources (such as memos and correspondence), the chapter focuses on the professional relationship between British actress Vivien Leigh and US producer David O. Selznick after the release of the astonishingly successful Gone with the Wind. The period from 1940 to 1945 was characterized by constant arguments and legal disputes concerning the actress’ wish to remain in her war-stricken homeland and the producer’s business interests which, by contrast, required her presence in Hollywood. The Leigh-Selznick collaboration thus serves as a case study of the uneasy dynamics between stars and movie producers or executives.
