Original language description
The chapter analyzes Václav Krška's film Scars of the Past (Zde jsou lvi), particularly its noir-inflected narrative strategies, visual properties and construction of the main character, and relates these to the specific historical situation in which it was made and released. When viewed through the noir lens, so to speak, the incompatibility of Scars of the Past with the prevailing ideological and aesthetic norms in Czechoslovakia of the late 1950s becomes more apparent. The film tackled sensitive issues (individualism, crisis of conscience, alcoholism, infidelity) in a highly unconventional manner which explains why it became such a welcome target for the threatened Communist regime.
