The Department of Asian Studies and the EU-funded project “The EU in the volatile Indo-Pacific Region” (EUVIP), hosted at the Department, organize a Round Table of international and national Vietnam experts. Pascal Bourdeaux, Christophe Robert, Alfred Gerstl and Filip Kraus will discuss current developments of Vietnam’s domestic and foreign policy. Building on their brief presentations, they will debate how Vietnam dealt with the COVID-19 pandemic and how it exacerbated various existing social, political and economic problems. Moreover, they will discuss Vietnam’s foreign policy, notably its relations with China, thereby focusing on the South China Sea dispute and the Belt and Road Initiative. The four experts will specifically discuss the new nationalism and anti-Chinese sentiments in Vietnam, asking whether anti-Chinese demonstrations are directed against China or the political situation in Vietnam itself. Furthermore, they will discuss religious policy and religious dynamics in contemporary Vietnam, embedded in the ASEAN and international context.
