Theory of Predicables and Sortals
Original language description
The paper aims to argue for the interpretation of Porphyry’s theoryof predicables in a system of modern logic, namely, sortal logic (SL). It isnamely an attempt to interpret it adequately within the conceptual frameworkof modern logic, which is able to capture its essential features. Thus, thepaper is focused on conceptual analysis and comparison. The theory ofpredicables (TP) is a classification of a certain type of predicates (first-order,monadic, simple). TP mainly establishes five different terms, genus, species, difference, property, and accident. The basic thesis of the interpretation in SL:let the species in TP be understood as a kind of sortals. The author interpretsthe concept of species as a complex sortal composed of a superordinatesortal concept and a specific difference concept, following in the footstepsof Aristotle. I believe that attempts to revive and reconstruct this doctrinecould be useful and beneficial for current natural and philosophical languageanalysis, not to mention the history of logic, in which TP is of immensehistorical importance
