Invasion of body snatchers: Fox Mulder’s queerness, monstrosity, and status quo

  • Original language description

The chapter proposes the hypothesis that the character of Fox Mulder can be interpreted as queer due to his opposition to social norms and authority, and his non-heteronormativity and feminization. At the same time, these attributes bring him closer to the monstrous, complicating his hero status. Given that the status quo in The X-Files is already corrupt, Mulder's monstrousness and anti-establishment stance make him an ideal protagonist. In the second part of the chapter, an analysis of Dreamland I, Dreamland II and Small Potatoes episodes in which shapeshifting monsters impersonate Mulder shows how Mulder's queerness is undermined by these narratives. The analysis shows that although Mulder's body represents traditional masculinity and its associated privileges, his mind takes on a queer and feminized form that rejects them. By impersonating him, the monsters from these episodes try to push Mulder back to status quo and symbolic order and thus hinder his quest.
