Digital Writing and the new primitive mind
Original language description
In this paper we introduce our project on Digital Writing as a major area of research at theISI (International Semiotics Institute). The aim of the project is to question the two majorpostulates of modern linguistics from the Course de Linguistique Générale. These two postulatesare a) the arbitrary nature of the linguistic sign, and b) the linear nature of the signifier. Weassume that both of these postulates of modern linguistics are challenged by the development ofcommunication technology and the multimedia character of human daily communicationSaussure also asserted spoken language as the primary linguistic system while written languagewas only secondary, a written representation of the vocal representation and derived from it. TheDigital Writing Project begins from Saussure but aligns with Roy Harris and Jacques Derridaregarding the status of ‘writing as such’ as the primary mode of human communication in thedigital era, affirming the prescience of semiology (broadly speaking) with regard to somecharacteristics of the digital paradigm shift.
