Lorenzo Valla (1406/7–1457): Encomium of St. Thomas Aquinas

  • Original language description

The English translation with an introduction of the praise of Thomas Aquinas by Lorenzo Valla, who had been invited to an annual lecture devoted to Thomas held at the convent of the Dominicans in Rome, Santa Maria sopra Minerva. This convent competed with the friars at San Domenico Maggiore in Naples, who advocated Thomist theology as their standard teaching, thus inaugurating what is now known as Thomism. The Romans were aware of Valla’s disdain for scholasticism, so they gave the philologist the diplomatic challenge of praising Aquinas without petrifying his authority.
