Introduction
Original language description
The study is a methodological introduction to the monograph. Here the author subscribes to Christopher Small's concept of "musicking", which emphasizes the importance of performance and reception of music as equal research fields, as opposed to the traditional focus on the musical text alone, as was especially the case in the former West German musicology several decades ago, when score research was considered a key discipline of musicology. The idea of the volume is to combine the methods and the findings of both social sciences and musicology in order to get to a broader understanding of the place of music in society and its social meaning.
