Siblinghood Amongst Older Adults: What Being a Sibling or Having Siblings Means
Original language description
The aim of this study is to understand siblinghood in old age through the perspective of Czech older adults. 41 in-depth interviews were analysed by the grounded theory method. Four themes characterizing siblinghood among older persons were identified in the data: (1) Siblinghood as a unique bond, i.e. a bond understood through genetic relatedness and the sense of belongingness strengthened by memories of shared childhood, by awareness of being the last members of the family of origin, and by “generational” understanding. (2) The importance of being consanguineous. As a result, the sibling bond is viewed as irrevocable, involving mutual commitments. Feelings of obligation are mixed with an emphasis on mutual independence. (3) The exchange of help and support. Ever-present emotional support and a belief about the mobilizability of siblings’ help are more important than actual practical help. 4) The rules of mutual ties. Doing siblinghood is about balancing the genealogical rules and the rule of family of procreation priority. The rule of genetic relatedness is negotiated against the selectivity rule reflecting the preferences of particular siblings. Among the rules important for “good siblinghood” are the rules of “being interested in themselves, mutual respect, no envy” and that of avoiding conflicts. Practices of making siblinghood intertwine with strategies of age-management.
