Subjects of Verbs of Perception and Cognition in Czech

  • Original language description

Verbs of cognition and perception in Czech and many other languages form a specific construction with their agent/experiencer noun phrases realized in a case other than the nominative. The typical case marking for these agents includes the dative or the accusative, depending on the verb. Stative verbs necessitate dative, while active verbs allow nominative for experiencers as well. This article examines the question whether these non-nominative agents might have some other properties typical for grammatical subjects and whether they might be considered “quirky” subjects. To determine this, a number of subjecthood tests inspired by Poole (2015) is used. These include anaphora binding, PRO control, and reduced relatives. It seems that some typical subject-like properties are present in case of the dative noun phrases.
