Is immanence the precondition of Giordano Bruno’s panpsychism and pantheism?
Original language description
The concept of immanence, linked to both panpsychism (soul in the world) and pantheism (divine in the world), differs in modern and pre-modern philosophy. This paper will explore these differences through the lens of Giordano Bruno’s thought. Although Bruno represents both panpsychism and pantheism, he does not use the term “immanence”, suggesting that the pre-modern understanding of immanence, contrasting sharply with transcendence, does not sit comfortably with Bruno’s views. Yet Bruno’s panpsychism might offer solutions to modern problems with immanence, either by discarding or redefining the concept.
