Islamic Shrines and Pilgrimage in Samarkand (1992-2022)

  • Original language description

The chapter discuss the cult of saints and Islamic shrines of Samarkand during the years of independence of Uzbekistan. Samarkand is one of the largest centers of Islamic culture in Central Asia. During the Soviet period, state resources were mobilized for the creation of strong secular ethno-national identities and the emergence of local nationalisms. Some shrines were preserved as monuments, museums, although pilgrimages to local shrines in certain regions continued until the fall of the USSR. Religious policy in independent Uzbekistan can be divided into several stages. The chapter discuss the features of each stage and the impact of state policy on the perception of holy places in Samarkand. After the fall of the USSR, in the 1990s, opportunities were given to local mahalla committees, individual sponsors to contribute to the restoration of some Islamic shrines in Samarkand. At the same time, there is a discussion in society about whether the shrines are part of the Islamic tradition or this is idolatry. After Sh. Mirziyoyev came to power (2016), the state policy towards Islam changed somewhat. The state encourages the development of local and international pilgrimage tourism, the publication of Islamic religious literature, which discusses the cult of Islamic saints. I believe that in the local society there are different views on holy places, and on this basis, different groups of pilgrims can be distinguished.
