CEE-Taiwan Relations: Current State and Outlook Following the 2024 Taiwan Elections
Original language description
In recent years, EU-Taiwan relations, particularly with Central and Eastern Europe (CEE), have strengthened. The 2024 Taiwan election results suggest continuity in foreign policy under President-elect Lai Ching-te, who will likely deepen ties with democratic partners, including the EU. However, a hung parliament presents challenges, requiring the ruling DPP to engage with other parties. During the 2020–2024 cycle, DPP’s parliamentary majority ensured close alignment with the administration. This time, while policy differences—especially regarding China—may arise, ties with Europe are expected to remain stable. Parliamentary diplomacy remains crucial, as many European legislatures proactively foster pragmatic cooperation with Taiwan, balancing this with adherence to the one China policy. Despite lacking formal diplomatic ties, Taiwan has built strong informal connections with Europe, leading to increased engagement.
