The Dalai Lama’s Visits to Taiwan Intertwined with Cross-Strait Relations

  • Original language description

The Dalai Lama has visited Taiwan three times—in 1997, 2001, and 2009—each visit intertwining religious and political dimensions. His presence significantly bolstered Tibetan Buddhism in Taiwan, with the number of Tibetan Buddhist centers increasing from 82 in 1996 to 473 in 2018, and the community expanding to approximately half a million adherents. Beyond religious teachings, the Dalai Lama engaged in secular discussions and interfaith forums, attracting large audiences and meeting with Taiwanese presidents Lee Teng-hui and Chen Shui-bian during his first two visits. These interactions left a lasting impact on cross-strait relations, prompting China to issue repeated warnings against inviting him to Taiwan. Despite China's opposition, the Dalai Lama's potential return holds significant religious importance for Taiwan. Concurrently, China has shown increasing interest in Buddhism, utilizing it as a strategy to quell unrest in Tibetan regions, as a form of cultural diplomacy, and to support the Belt and Road Initiative. This complex interplay underscores the intricate relationship between religion and politics in the context of cross-strait relations.
