Cosmology in Russian Thought on the Eve of Modernity
Original language description
This paper focuses on the seventeenth-century Russian, Ukrainian and Belarusian (Ruthenian) texts reflecting cosmology. It addresses the following problems: the background of the Muscovite readership in cosmology; translated sources; the traditionalists’ attempts to grope for an adequate image of the universe based on acknowledged Orthodox sources; and the controversies around certain cosmological aspects. The discussed texts illustrate the slow and gradual transfer of Western knowledge in the seventeenth-century Russia. The essay aims at demonstrating how particular aspects of the worldview, such as cosmology, provide an insight into the cultural crisis and processes of change that Russian society was going through in the seventeenth century.
