Rafiq Kathwari is a celebrated Kashmiri-American poet, renowned for his poignant exploration of themes such as displacement, identity, and familial bonds. He became the first non-Irish recipient of the prestigious Patrick Kavanagh Poetry Award for his debut collection, In Another Country. Kathwari's works often draw inspiration from his experiences in Kashmir, his mother's struggles with mental illness during the Partition of India, and broader human tragedies like the conflict in Palestine. His most recent collection, My Mother's Scribe (2020), offers a deeply personal narrative told through the eyes of a young boy witnessing his mother’s descent into madness amidst socio-political upheaval. A skilled translator, Kathwari has also rendered select poems of South Asian poet-philosopher Muhammad Iqbal into English. Dividing his time between New York, Dublin, and Kashmir, Kathwari’s poetry bridges continents and centuries, blending memory with invention and reality with surrealism.
