  • Original language description

This study presents the primary output of a project for the biography of Jan Löwenbach (1880–1972), a lawyer and a prominent motivator of Czech musical culture in the first half of the 20th century. Taking due account of key turning points in his life, it outlines the extent and availability of pertinent source material and uses newly discovered archival documents to illustrate Löwenbach’s contribution in the field of music history and in organizing Czech musical life in the early 20th century. The text brings into focus specific aspects of his activities during the period before the First World War, related primarily to the personality and work of Bedřich Smetana. It refers to Löwenbach’s role as a mediator in the purchase of Bohemica from the collection of Friedrich Donebauer,as well as his involvement as a co-founder of the Committee for the Erection of a Monument to Bedřich Smetana in Prague, and renders a detailed account of the circumstances surrounding the publication of correspondence between Bedřich Smetana and Ludevít Procházka. All of these exploratory probes simultaneously document the operations of the Artists’ Society, as well as the professional pursuits of Zdeněk Nejedlý during the period under survey.
