Hylomorphism and the Platonization of Logic
Original language description
I will focus on the relationship of formality of logic to the hylomorphic framework. Surprisingly enough, Aristotle is not the father of the hylomorphic doctrine in logic. The question is then when and why this distinction was introduced into logic and if there are any philosophical implications of such a decision. The main thesis of this article is that the Aristotelian dichotomy of matter and form in logic paradoxically became the path to its platonization. Consequently, it will be argued that the doctrine of hylomorphism requires a specific theory of concepts. The main thesis will be argued as follows: first, it will be shown when logical hylomorphism appears in the history of logic and what interpretation is given to it. We will then turn to Kant, who plays a crucial role in our story, since it is he who explicitly conceives of logic as formal, i.e. focused purely on form. We will take a closer look at Kant's argument for the formality of logic. In analyzing it, it will become clear that a crucial part of Kant's argument is a specific theory of concepts, which will thus be understood as a necessary part of logical hylomorphism.
