From History to Legends: The Invasion of the Mongols in Central Europe
Original language description
This chapter describes the Mongol invasion of Moravia in 1241. Based on an analysis of contemporary sources, it describes the passage of the Mongol army through part of Moravia. It also traces the development of historical memory of this event, which was later confused with the invasion of Moravia by Hungarian troops in 1253. The gradual mythologization also included the family legend of the Šternberks, specifically the story of Jaroslav of Šternberk and the fictional siege of Olomouc in 1241. The chapter also traces Baroque historiography and modern forgeries of the 19th century.
