Between the Rural and the Urban: The Inhabitation of Space in the Work of Marie-Hélène Lafon
Original language description
The chapter examines the novel and essays of contemporary French writer Marie-Helene Lafon from the perspective of urbanism and ruralism. It is based on the spatial geopoetic theories of René Westphal, Rachel Bouvet and others. The work is understood here as a map in which individual characters leave their traces. The author himself is a geographer mapping space with his work. In this way, Lafonová portrays a specific vanishing rural space of the mountain solitudes of the French Massif Central. In addition to the author's essays, our study focuses especially on the novels Les Derniers indiens, Joseph, Les Pays and L´Histoire du fils, while showing how their heroes inhabit their living space. It emphasizes the meaning-making role of the landscape and its individual elements, as well as the relationship of man to them. It also notices the author's approach to writing and language, which in her case have a rural character and emphasize the connection with the soil and the landscape.
