Religion on display: A comparative study of the museum of world religions and exhibition spaces in temples in Taiwan
Original language description
Taiwan has seen an increase in religious exhibitions in museums and temples since its rapid growth of religious organisations. This chapter investigates whether the concept of religious efficacy or ling in Chinese folk religion has been considered a heritage component by exhibition designers and whether religious believers might view the display of ling residing in religious objects as problematic. Drawing on ethnographic studies in two temples in the Xinzhuang District and the Museum of World Religions in the Yonghe District of New Taipei City, this chapter offers a fresh analysis of the scholarship on religious artefacts in museums and temples. It deals with how and why the transformation of ling’s ritual efficacy occurs and how ling adjusts itself to different contexts. In sum, our research reveals ambiguity in believers’ contemplation of ling in the display of religious materials in religious museums.
