Why the EU must scale up support for Myanmar’s resistance
Original language description
This document presents policy recommendations for the European Union regarding its role in Myanmar four years after the 2021 military coup. The authors argue that resistance to the military junta — led by the National Unity Government (NUG), ethnic resistance organisations (EROs), and locally supported People’s Defense Forces (PDFs) — has significantly weakened the regime but continues to face limited international backing. The EU is therefore urged to strengthen its engagement through cross-border humanitarian assistance, support for parallel governance structures, inclusion of non-state actors, regional diplomatic initiatives, and expanded educational programmes. The report emphasises the importance of aligning the EU’s values-based foreign policy with practical support for a democratic and federal future for Myanmar.
