The 'Father' of Country Music: Jimmie Rodgers as Innovator
Original language description
Jimmie Rodgers (1897–1933) is often referred to as “the father of country music”, “the singing brakeman”, and even “America’s blue yodeller”. The first label implies that he establisheda certain tradition which his successors have been influenced and inspired by, in other words, a certain ‘purist’ country style. The following two labels, however, call this ‘purist’categorization into question. Rodgers’ signature employment of yodelling (most frequently associated with Alpine countries) launched a craze in American country music. Rodgers was also clearly influenced by African-American music, being one of the first white musicians to refer to a number of his songs as blues tunes, e.g. one of his most celebrated songs, “MuleSkinner Blues” from 1931. Those who would argue for a ‘purist’ tradition in country music therefore ignore the fact that Rodgers was constantly introducing innovative forms andstyles into his music.
