    Trauma Theory in Children’s Literature

  • Original language description

This lecture introduced trauma theory and its application in contemporary English-language children’s literature, with a focus on narratives of war, forced migration, and displacement. It provided an introduction to selected key concepts in trauma theory, including repression, silence, fragmentation, postmemory, witnessing, and recovery. The lecture outlined the historical development of trauma theory, from the early work of Sigmund Freud and Josef Breuer to later contributions by scholars such as Cathy Caruth, Judith Herman, and Marianne Hirsch. Particular attention was paid to why children’s literature represents an important medium for engaging with traumatic experiences, highlighting the role of metaphor, symbolism, and visual storytelling in addressing fear, loss, and memory.
