The Images of Heretics in the Bohemian Religious Conflict (15th Century)
Original language description
Chapter examines the representation of Jan Hus and the Hussites in fifteenth-century visual culture and the shifting reception of these images depending on religious and political context. It focuses primarily on Catholic anti-Hussite iconography, its thematic frameworks and geographic distribution, and compares it with Hussite and Utraquist conceptions of Hus as a martyr and saint. Particular attention is paid to historical chronicle depictions of Hus’s burning at the stake (Ulrich von Richenthal, Diebold Schilling) and their relationship to memory, propaganda, and the construction of the “heretic.” The study demonstrates that the meaning of images was not fixed but shaped within specific confessional, legal, and cultic frameworks, and that similar visual models could serve both to discredit and to sanctify the same figure.
