The Emergence of the Narrative: Historia sacra and the "Cultification" of Medieval Works among Transalpine Jesuits
Original language description
The study explores the post-Tridentine reinterpretation and “cultification” of medieval Marian images and sculptures within transalpine Jesuit culture, with particular focus on the Bohemian lands. It examines the role of historia sacra–based narratives in integrating older works into early Baroque devotional practice and in confessional polemics of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. By analysing Jesuit historical and hagiotopographical writings—especially those of Bohuslav Balbín—the paper demonstrates how the antiquity of medieval images was construed as evidence of Catholic truth and continuity with early Christianity.
