Historical Legacy How Did Taiwan Become Taiwan?

  • Original language description

This chapter lays the foundation for understanding the current developments in Taiwan, which are explained in the following chapters of this book. In chronological order, it explores Taiwan's rich history – a tapestry of transformative events that have shaped both its identity and the world's perception of the island. From its origins as the cradle of Austronesian expansion to its encounters with colonial powers, waves of Han Chinese migration, and eventual integration into the Republic of China (ROC), its history is marked by profound changes. Its status has long been a subject of dispute. Nevertheless, the ROC, on the territory of Taiwan and adjacent smaller islands, effectively exercises its jurisdiction and, according to many international law experts, meets the criteria for statehood under the Montevideo Convention (more in Chapter 7). To fully grasp Taiwan's present-day position, it is essential to understand these historical forces that shaped it. Therefore, to better understand all the specifics related to Taiwan and its perception in the world, it is necessary to look at its past. What is the history of this fascinating island? Who occupied it, and who ruled over it? How did Taiwan come to its current position?
