Domestic Politics: How did Taiwan Become a Democracy?

Taiwan has shaken off the shackles of an authoritarian regime and today is considered a mature democracy where three power turnovers have taken place between the two main rival parties, the Kuomintang (KMT) and the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP). The current Taiwanese government system is based on the rule of law and respect for basic human rights and freedoms. In its annual report evaluating democratic freedom for the year 2023, Freedom House awarded Taiwan a score of 94 out of 100, the second highest in Asia, closely following Japan. Similarly, the nongovernmental organization CIVICUS, which monitors the state of civil freedom, designated Taiwan in 2023 as the only place in Asia with an “open” civic space for the fifth consecutive year. In the World Press Freedom Index published by Reporters Without Borders, Taiwan ranks first in Asia and 35th globally. How did Taiwan actually become a democracy? What does democracy look like in practice in today's Taiwan, and what challenges does it face? Why has democratic Taiwan not yet got rid of authoritarian symbols?
