    The History of Punctuation Theory

  • Original language description

European punctuation theory was strongly influenced by rhetoric, in particular the concept of the rhetorical period, which integrated semantic, syntactic, prosodic and aesthetic aspects. This concept was adopted in the European vernacular languages, but it was further developed differently in the individual language cultures. This is demonstrated here using the history of German punctuation theory as an example. At the same time, differences to other languages (including English, French and Czech) are addressed.
