Original language description
The symposium brought together sixty researchers from twenty countries and four continents. The plenary speakers and a number of individual contributions addressed three major areas: language attitudes in Spanish-English bilingual families and communities in the United States; perceptions and attitudes towards Spanish varieties, especially in the context of migration in Latin America and Europe or when teaching Spanish as a foreign or heritage language; theoretical and methodological issues and innovations in research of language attitudes. Other contribution addressed language attitudes in the context of Portuguese and attitudes towards indigenous languages (especially in Mexico, Ecuador and Argentina, but also, for example, the Wolof language in Senegal). The diverse range of topics also included, for example, the situation of Galician sign language, inclusive language in Brazil and Israel, attitudes towards creole languages in the Cape Verde Islands or among Caribbean students in the Netherlands.
