Original language description
One of the most prominent manifestations of cooperation between states as traditional subjects of international law is the creation and activities of international organizations (IOs). There are several criteria of classification of IOs. From a territorial point of view, we could distinguish the organisations with the universal scope and operability and organisations active at a regional level. The significance and position of a particular IO within the international community depends on several factors such as the number, economic or military power of its member states, the capacity and operability, competencies and the level of participation in the life of the international community. The Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) serves as a typical regional IO, which plays the key role in international cooperation within the region of Southeast Asia. This chapter analyses the foundations, activities, actions and positions of ASEAN with specific emphasis on the questions of regional security management. In particular examples we deal with the real problems and the practical role of ASEAN in the field of regional cooperation and security. After more than half a century of its existence there is not only enough data to evaluate its outcomes but also to define the challenges which lie ahead of the region and cooperation within it.
