The aim of the article is an attempt to show the relation of some Byzantine thinkers (Theodore Metochites, Georgios Gemisthos Plethon) to ancient traditions (scepticism, paganism) and their attitudes to scientific and religious matters. The paper focuseson two aspects that show the relation between science and theology in Byzantine thought. Both aspects are connected with the reception of ancient philosophical tradition in Byzantine thought.
