The Connection between Thomism and the Theory of Viktor E. Frankl on the Meaning and Goal of Life
Original language description
If we analyzed and compared the approaches of St. Thomas and V. E. Frankl more deeply we would certainly find many inaccuracies. However, we can say that St. Thomas's teaching of the last end of man influenced the thinking of Frankl in his theory on themeaning of life. In Frankl, man's orientation towards God is guided by Aristotle principle of entelechy. On the basis of Aristotle (or St. Thomas), Frankl made a turn that he applied on man. This turn is a great asset to our times. What Frankl pointed out was that instead of the effectual case, the most important case for man was the final case of which he spoke as of meaning. Thus Frankl's great contribution lies in the fact that he returned man from a technical (positivistic) understanding to the original understanding. A link between Thomism and Frankl's thinking is also suggested by a Czech Thomist M. Habáň.
