The Law of Sin in Romans
Original language description
The paper focuses on the phrase "the law of sin" that occurs three times in the Letter to the Romans (7:23, 7:25, 8:2). When using the term nomos in Romans 7 (22 occurrences), the apostle Paul must have thought of the Mosaic law, but in 7:23,25 we must accept a broader and metaphorical sense. Then "the law of sin" is to be understood as the status of the human person that is under the rule and domination of sin. In Rom 8:2 Paul speaks of the liberation from "the law of sin and death", which only underscores the dimension of the freedom of those who live in Christ Jesus and have his Spirit. This freedom necessarily has to show its positive side, too, which is apparent in the life of love.
