The Guilt Coping Style in the Relapse Process for Methamphetamine Users
Original language description
There is a lack of research exploring the presence of shame and guilt and the coping response to guilt after abstinence violation by individuals recovered from methamphetamine addiction. The major aim of the prestudy was to perform preliminary exploration of the coping process after abstinence violation, with special attention paid to the guilt of participants. The study reports on the predominant coping styles of a sample of male and female methamphetamine addicts upon admission to post-treatment for substance abuse. The method of multiple explanatory case studies from Yin was used as the research method and as a conceptual framework Marlatt's model of relapse prevention was used as the initial model. The common approach in relapse prevention is an emphasis on behavior which avoids risky situations. The current study recommends paying more attention to examining the role of the guilt coping style for relapse control and focusing on the acquisition of skills needed to cope with guilt. Further theoretical and practical implications are discussed.
