Phenomenon of Emergence from the Perspectives of Three Science-Religion Scholars Facilitating the Science-Religion Dialogue
Original language description
The process of evolution may be viewed as a series of emergence steps from the origin of the universe through multiple chemical and biological stages to human minds. The question of what the "next emergence step" will be, beyond the human mind, is addressed in this essay from the viewpoints of three scholars involved in the science-religion dialogue. Each author outlines some of the earlier emergence steps leading to human thought before addressing the future. The three scholars come from Jewish and Christian backgrounds, differing in their answers to the question, but all optimistic that we are moving toward a more spiritual future. Writings will be presented from the works of: Catholic priest, paleontologist and geologist Pierre Teilhard de Chardin; Professor of (process) theology and philosophy Philip Clayton; and Professor of biochemistry and biophysics Harold J. Morowitz. The phenomenon of emergence, as presented, may be seen as a valuable subject for promoting dialogue between natural sciences and the monotheistic religions.
