The soul and life – the soul and ratio: Augustine’s criticism of the final proof in Plato’s Phaedo
Original language description
In Augustine’s Soliloquia II,13,23 we find a polemic against the last proof for soul’s immortality in Plato’s Phaedo 102b-107a. In his following treatise De immortalitae animae 9,16, Augustine trays to offer a series of other proofs for soul’s immortality, in one of them coming very close to Plato’s idea of soul connected with the Form of life and thus not admitting death as the opposite of life. Nevertheless, what matters to Augustine in his proofs is the immortality of the rational soul, not the indestructibility of the principle of cosmic life. It seems to be this factor which links Augustine with Porphyry and which also makes him approach with caution the Platonic proof of the immortality of the soul as the bearer of life.
