1 Corinthians 13: A Piece of Poetry?
Original language description
The well-known text about love of the apostle Paul in 1 Corinthians 13 is often connected with a term from the poetry, notably “hymn” or (in German) “Hohelied” and others (e.g. “psalm” or “ode”). However, strictly speaking, the text has no formal signs of poetry, e.g. it has no metre. The fact that 1 Cor 13 has the influence upon the readers as a piece of poetry is given by Paul’s ravishing and captivating language (similar Hellenistic or Jewish texts could be brought for comparison although a direct influence on Paul is not certain) and the topic itself which is love. However, it would be not sufficient to admire only the beauty of 1 Cor 13 without considering its theological content. This chapter emphasizes and extols the highest value of the Christian faith, namely love that is eternal.
