The Double Interpretation of Eliphaz' Dream in Gregory the Great's Morals on the Book of Job

  • Original language description

Gregory’s interpretation will be discussed in four steps. First of all, I will present some remarks on the contemporary exegesis of Eliphaz’ dream, or more precisely, the questions faced by the exegetes. Secondly, I will explain Gregory’s first interpretation, which is highly critical to Eliphaz’ claims. Thirdly, this interpretation will be compared to the second one, which is carried out in a positive tone and contains the excursus on the triple figurative meaning of sleep in the Bible. In the conclusion, I will offer some hermeneutical considerations proceeding from Gregory’s interpretation.
