The Function and Importance of Matthew 28:16–20 in the Gospel of Matthew

  • Original language description

The text of Matt 28:16–20 is the final pericope of the Gospel of Matthew, which describes the apparition of the risen Jesus to eleven disciples on a mountain in Galilee. This text has no parallel in the whole Gospel tradition; it originates from traditional source material, which was heavily redacted by the evangelist Matthew. This final pericope is the climax of the Gospel of Matthew, where all main theological statements of the Gospel are put together in a form of “testament” of Jesus, which presents the instructions and guarantees for the time of the Church. We can see that whatever elements in Matt 28:16–20 are recalled from earlier parts of the Gospel, the emphasis in this final passage is clearly on their significance and implication for the time of the Church. While the last words of Jesus in the Gospel of John are the promise of the continued existence of a believing community of Christians (personified by the nameless disciple) until his glorious parousia (cf. John 21:22–24), in the Gospel of Matthew the last words of Jesus are the promise of his permanent presence in the community of believers (Matt 28:20).
