Original language description
What stands out in Augustine’s theory when compared with the Neoplatonic authors is, among others, the relationship between time and speech, where speech functions as a mediator between unity and multitude. God creates by means of the timeless Word/Speech, in which all is pronounced “simultaneously.” Through speech, in which time is present, human beings connect passing things into a whole and transform past or expected things into present ones (for example, when, like Augustine in the first part of the Confessions, people tell the stories of their lives), thus performing their task of unifying the passing plurality.
