Imago dei in Pelagius
Original language description
Pelagius’ conception of imago Dei is based on various motifs from Christian and Stoic traditions. The image of God in man is understood as their original equipment in creation, first and foremost human reason and free will. This image cannot be lost but can be (and actually was) obscured. The image of God is restored in baptism, when the capacity of reason and will is freed and even made stronger. Christians are obliged to persevere in new habits and strive for full communion with God through Christ. However, Pelagius does not contribute much to the development of the topic and does not elucidate tensions present already in the previous traditions.
