Alois Musil, Friedrich Delitzsch and the Babel-Bible Controversy

  • Original language description

Both Alois Musil and Friedrich Delitzsch were leading scholars in the beginning of 20th century. It was not only through their academic publications but also through their efforts in the establishment of academic institutions supporting studies in the rapidly developing field of so-called Oriental studies. Friedrich Delitzsch was the co-founder and sponsor of the German Oriental Society in Berlin (Ger. Deutsche Orient-Gesellschaft) and Alois Musil was a co-founding member of the Oriental Institute in Prague (Cz. Orientální ústav). Nevertheless, their academic outlooks differed. This became obvious especially after the publication of Friedrich Delitzsch’s lectures on the historical and religious context of Biblical and Babylonian cultures. Friedrich Delitzsch began the dispute over panbaby-lonism when Musil was lecturing in Olomouc. In those days, Musil was working on his monograph the Arabia Petrea. Given his affiliation to his alma mater in Olomouc, he published his contribution to the Babel-Bible-Controversy in the Czech language. However, because of his choice of language his published stud-ies were not noticed by the international academic audience. In the following pages we are going to present the structure of Musil’s texts, published in the Czech language, responding to Friedrich Delitzsch’s lectures. In our perception, the Catholic voices have so far been given little attention and not examined closely enough.
