Assisted reproduction in the Czech Republic

  • Original language description

The regulation of assisted reproductive technologies in the Czech Republic is relatively liberal: all techniques are allowed, publicly accepted and widely used (IVF; ICSI; assisted hatching; PGD; donation of sperm, eggs or embryos – within particular age limits and with the guarantee of donor anonymity). The wide range of procedures available and the accessibility and anonymity of donors, together with high success rates and low prices for treatment, attract many foreign couples who come to the Czech Republic mostly for treatment using donor eggs. Surrogate motherhood is not allowed, since Czech law considers only the woman who gave birth to the child the mother. However, surrogate motherhood is practiced informally. Similarly, assisted reproduction that is not legally accessible to single (or homosexual) women can be provided if they fulfill the only legal condition – a signed form by the prospective father (as there is no investigation of the type of relationship). Infertility treatment in the Czech Republic is reserved only for heterosexual couples in which the woman is 22–49 years old. Attempts to officially open assisted reproduction to single women or women outside the age limit have not been successful, mainly due to criticism from conservative and Catholic politicians.
