Papacy in the digital age: the end of the imperative
Original language description
The work of Popes John Paul II, Benedict XVI, and Francis is accompanied by a dynamic change in the forms of media communication. The primary textual sources for this text are the statements of Popes John Paul II, Benedict XVI, and Francis on World Communications Day, as well as their activities aimed at promoting the active presence of the Church in the new tools of media communication. With the help of a diachronic analysis of the continuity and discontinuity of the magisterium’s approach to media communication, we will present how the progressive ideas of the Papal See have been reflected in its activity in the virtual communication space. Our aim is to demonstrate how, in recent years, imperatives have been disappearing in the texts of popes reflecting the media experiences and how their messages have been opening up to a wider audience in terms of their content.
