The Liturgical Movement in Europe and the Theology of the Space of Celebration

  • Original language description

From the earliest spaces of liturgical gatherings to the present day, the design of liturgical space has been constantly changing. It has been influenced by cultural and historical factors, artistic and architectural concepts, theology, ecclesiology and liturgy. Liturgical space has combined various perspectives, approaches and often conflicting demands. Before the Second Vatican Council, the efforts of several theologians seeking an internal reform of the Church were strongly felt, and these efforts found expression in the liturgical movement. While the primary aim of the liturgical movement, alongside an in-depth study of Christian worship, was to make the liturgy more intelligible to the faithful, this also influenced a new perception of sacred space. The aim of this paper is to present the important centres of the liturgical movement in Europe that also had an impact on the Slovak environment, focusing on its representatives, how they thought about liturgical space and its theological interpretation, whose work was in many ways applied in the later liturgical reform.
